HOW DOES GLANVILL CALCULATE MY MOTOR VEHICLE INSURANCE PREMIUM
Motor insurance premium is regulated by the National Insurance Commission and categorized according to different Classes (Private and Commercial), Types of vehicles - Private Motor, Own Goods, Staff Bus, Truck/General Cartage, Special Types, Tricycles and Motorcycle
The cover can either be Comprehensive or Third Party Only
- Comprehensive is calculated at 5% of the insured/Vehicle value
- Third Party is uniform based on the type of the vehicle as follows
Private motors - N15,000.00
Own Goods - N20,000.00
Staff Bus - N20,000.00
Trucks/General Cartage - N100,000.00
Special Type - N20,000.00
Tricycle - N5,000.00
Motorcycle - N3,000.00
CAN I REDUCE MY PREMIUM? WHY PAY MORE FOR MY INSURANCE WHEN I DON’T HAVE TO
Premium reduction is a function of the type of property under consideration.
For Vehicles, it is very important that the vehicles are reassessed every renewal to ensure that it is renewed at the current market value. Vehicles are depreciating assets (except for period of increasing inflation) with all things being equal, the values of vehicle reduces annually and where this is considered for insurance the premium ought to reduce also.
For property, plants and machinery – A building should be insured at a value that will be sufficient enough to rebuild the same type of building on the same land within the period of the insurance. If the value of the build at the time of loss is lesser than the cost of rebuilding the same type of building at the time of loss, the building will be considered underinsured and the insured will bear a ratable proportion of the claim such that the insured will not get full compensation for the loss.
Landed property are appreciating assets and thus the value increases annually making the premium also to increase annually. The Insured may decide to maintain the same value for the landed property for certain period like 5years if the marginal annual increase is not substantial, this way the premium can be maintained at the same level for that period
Plant and Machinery should also be insured at the current market value because should there be a claim it will be settled based on the current market value at the time of loss. Insuring it at a value lower than this meANSWER it will be considered as underinsurance and the insured will bear a ratable proportion of the claim.
CAN YOU ACTUALLY REDUCE YOUR PREMIUM – YES – asides from insuring your property at a value that is lower than the current market value or future cost of rebuilding (which we do not encourage), you can do any of the followings
- You may opt for reduced cover e.g. take a Fire Only insurance cover instead of a Fire & Special Perils Insurance, Third Party Fire and Theft instead of Comprehensive motor insurance cover.
- You can remove some policy extensions paid for
- You can combine your property policies to enjoy package discounts
- You can also seek to applicable discounts to reduce your premium (Not applicable to motor)
- You can entrust your asset to Glanvill to negotiate a cheaper rate for your risk or secure a better rate with another insurer.
You can segment your premium payment into Quarterly or Half yearly to enable you pay at your convenience
WHAT IS POLICY EXCESS
Policy Excess means the part/proportion of every claim to be (first) borne by the insured before the Insurer settles the claim. It is the amount you make in contribution to a claim.
The basic purpose of an excess is to make the insured a co-insurer on the policy so that the insured will act carefully always in handling their asset and not act uninsured. It is also to discourage flood of trivial claims.

WHAT IF I AM MAKING A CLAIM? HOW SOON DO I GET MY CLAIM SETTLED AFTER IT HAS BEEN REPORTED TO GLANVILL
This largely depends on the time it takes the insured to submit all claim supporting documents for the processing of the claim. After notifying Glanvill about your claim, you will be required to submit some documents to enable your Insurer to process the claim. Upon submission of all required claim supporting documents, the insurer will make an offer and issue the Discharged Voucher. From the time of accepting the offer and returning the Discharged Voucher, it may take an average of three to seven days for the payment to be made.

The purpose of insurance is to place the insured in the same financial position or near to the same position the insured was prior to the loss immediately after the loss. While it may be practicable to project the cost of rebuilding a similar building in future and insure the property in the cost of rebuilding, same may not be applicable to vehicle insurance as the model of the car and its parts may not be in production again and if it can be found may cost more.
